Marios Ioannou is a graduate of the prestigious Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece in Athens. He began his stage career at Sfendoni Theatre, performing as Pylades and the Messenger in Iphigenia in Tauris (dir. by Anna Kokkinou). He soon distinguished himself for his performances, notably as Woyzeck (dir. by Achim Wieland) in Büchner’s play of the same title, which toured in Zurich, Berlin, and Stuttgart. He also made a strong impression as Casca in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar (dir. by Nikos Karathanos) and as Ben in Lars Von Trier’s Dogville (dir. by Antonis Kalogridis), both productions staged by the National Theatre of Greece. His portrayal of Popritchin in Gogol’s Diary of a Madman captivated both audiences and critics in London and Cyprus, and the production continues to be performed to this day, fifteen years after its premiere. In Fear Industry (a devised piece), dir. by Achim Wieland, Marios brought to life multiple characters in a production that toured in Athens, Berlin, Gothenburg, Malmö, and Bremen, earning the title of Best Theatre Production on Berlin Stages 2016 from Zitty Magazin. For the past six years, Marios has embodied Geisha Kikuno Hana in The Tea Ceremony (dir. by Achim Wieland). The production was awarded for its direction at the Milano Off Festival, while Marios received the Best Performance Award at the FIAT Festival in Montenegro. The play has toured in Rome, Berlin, Sarajevo, Turin, and Sicily. In 2017, he was commissioned by the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 to write and direct Uniting the Mediterranean Sea, an ambitious international co-production featuring actors from Morocco, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, France, and Cyprus. In cinema, Marios has collaborated with distinguished directors such as Nikos Koundouros (Oi Fotografoi), Renos Haralambidis (Cheap Smokes), Stamatis Tsarouchas (Oi Gennaioi Tis Samothrakis), Maria Lafi (Circo de la Vida), Adonis Florides (Rosemarie), Yannis Veslemes (GOAL), Ioakeim Mylonas (Greenhouse), Vladan Subotić (Bourek), among others. At the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in 2002, he was honored with the Best Actor Award for his role as Moustafa in Kalabush by Adonis Florides and Thodoris Nikolaidis. Ten years later, his performance as Andy in Fish N Chips (dir. by Elias Demetriou) earned him a special distinction at the Cyprus International Film Days Festival, and received praise from The Hollywood Reporter. Most recently, his portrayal of a trans woman in Tsikitigklon – The Fairy and the Man by Marios Metis won him Best Performance Awards at both the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus (ISFFC) and the Spicy Indie International Film Festival. Beyond the stage and screen, Marios is co-artistic director of the theatre company SRSLYyours, and a passionate acting instructor for both amateur and professional actors. In addition, he teaches business professionals key acting principles to enhance their communication skills through the workshop series Voice it with Style.
